My Bis Sister Live in a Fantasy World Volume 1 Epilogue

Epilogue: Is This How a Harem Starts?

The day after his death match with Natsuki, Yuichi returned to school. He was on his guard.

They’d left the unconscious Natsuki on the floor and returned home. What would she do after she woke up?

Mutsuko seemed to have had some thoughts about it, but she had yet to share them with Yuichi.

Chapter 9: At Last! The Battle Against Serial Killer I

Yuichi and Mutsuko followed Natsuki’s directions and arrived at the designated town. It was a slum full of homeless people, about an hour by train away from their hometown of Seishin.

They used their cell phone GPSes to find the exact location, which turned out to be a run-down old factory.

Chapter 8: What Do You Say When Someone Tells You They’re Writing a Novel?

Kanako’s lecture continued, uninterrupted. No one could get a word in edgewise. Granted, Yuichi didn’t know anything about the subject to begin with...

She’d started with Nobunaga, but gradually got off the subject, shifting from Shimazu’s sutegamari retreat strategy to the bravery of Nabeshima’s warriors in Saga, and on to the Hagakure from there.

Chapter 7: Welcome to the Survival Club!

“Hey, Sakaki! Did you hear? There’s a delinquent at the school!”

“Huh?” The day after the mess with the killer, Yuichi came to school, only to be immediately accosted by Shota.

The label above his head now read “Ball Washer.”

Chapter 6: When You Borrow Money, You’ve Got to Return It

If the human body came with natural limiters, that meant there were things it wasn’t meant to do. So what would happen if you broke through those limits?

The answer was what Yuichi’s body was now experiencing.

He was curled up in a corner of the hallway, his face screwed up in pain. His shredded muscles were swollen from their self-healing process. Put simply, his body was screaming in agony. His left leg was especially bad. He wouldn’t be walking for a while.

Chapter 5: The Battle Against Serial Killer II

“Hey! Why are we running away?”

“Because he’s chasing us, duh!”

“Why is he chasing us?”

“How should I know?!” Yuichi dragged Aiko by the hand until they reached the end of the corridor.

Chapter 4: Familiars and Barriers and Auras and Monsters and a Monster Hunter Society

It was the next day.

Yuichi had walked to school with Aiko. They still weren’t sure why Aiko had been attacked, so Yuichi was on his guard for a repeat of last time. Of course, he expected nothing was going to happen in the classroom with so many people around, and sure enough, the morning classes passed without incident.

Chapter 3: Let’s Visit Sakaki’s House

Yuichi picked the least populated route to walk home.

He cast a glance at Aiko, who was walking next to him. Yuichi’s blazer was managing to conceal most of the blood staining her uniform. It couldn’t hide it all, but at least it was better than nothing.

Aiko, noticing him looking her way, spoke up.

My Big Sister Live in a Fantasy World Volume 1 Prologue

Prologue: The Soul Reader Awakens!

“Mom! Yu’s awakened his magic sight! This calls for sekihan rice to celebrate!”

“Oh, dear. I don’t know quite what you’re talking about, but if that’s a good thing, sekihan rice is what we’ll have.”

Yuichi nearly spat out his breakfast miso soup.

No, I’m okay. No one really does that outside of anime and manga.

His big sister, Mutsuko, had made a big production to him about how he couldn’t tell anyone about his sight — what if a secret society came after him?! Yet apparently, she saw nothing wrong with telling their parents.

He glared at her, willing her to stop talking about it.

Mutsuko grinned back at him, clearly misinterpreting the gesture. She didn’t get it at all.

Mutsuko was just entering her second year of high school, the same high school Yuichi would be attending starting today. People said she was good-looking, though Yuichi, being her brother and all, couldn’t really confirm or deny this.

Her hair was long and held in place with a variety of metal hair clips. To the casual observer, they just looked like barrettes shaped to resemble knives, but she always bragged that they were real blades made from Damascus steel.

Her build was slender and her chest was modest, but that didn’t seem to bother her. She always said that having a big chest would just get in the way, and it sounded like she really meant it.

His mom was very easygoing, so the talk of magic sight didn’t bother her.She probably didn’t even know what “magic sight” was.

Yuichi checked his father’s reaction, but he was focused on his newspaper, occasionally taking a bite of food. He didn’t seem especially interested in the conversation.

Yuichi’s little sister, Yoriko, was enjoying her breakfast as if everything were normal. Mutsuko was always saying weird things like that, so she barely seemed to notice.

Yoriko would be starting her second year of middle school today. Unlike Mutsuko, who paid little mind to her appearance, Yoriko was very concerned with looking pretty. Her long, black hair suited her very well, and she took very good care of it. She wouldn’t dream of afflicting it with bizarre ornaments like her sister did. Her face resembled Mutsuko’s, but she had a serene air about her, and as far as womanly proportions went, she already outstripped her.

The talk of magic sight continued. Yuichi looked around the table, and let out a sigh. Maybe he should have done more to get her to keep her mouth shut. He thought back to the incident of the night before.

It had been after midnight. Yuichi had rapped softly on the door to Mutsuko’s room.

Their parents and their little sister would all be sleeping soundly by that time, but he knew Mutsuko would be up late doing some weird thing or another.

The door opened right away and Mutsuko stood before him. She was dressed in pink pajamas, staring at Yuichi in confusion.

“Yu? What are you doing here at this hour?”

“Um, there’s something I wanted your help with...”

“Sure thing! You’re gonna tell me about your collection of big sister fetish games, right? Don’t worry, I don’t mind a bit!” Mutsuko puffed out her chest.

Yuichi had no idea where she’d gotten that idea from, but she sounded extremely proud of it.

“That’s not it!”

“That’s the only reason a young man ever visits his big sister’s room in the middle of the night! I’ve seen it in anime!”

“But this isn’t anime, it’s real life.”

The comeback lacked the force of his convictions. What he was about to ask her was the opposite of realistic.

“Anyway, quit standing out there and come inside so we can talk, okay?” Mutsuko beckoned him inside.

She still had her kotatsu out, though the heater underneath the low table was unnecessary here in early spring. They both walked up to it and took a seat.

Yuichi hadn’t been inside Mutsuko’s room in a long time. The sight of it being even more cluttered than it used to be left him feeling slightly drained.

He picked up a pamphlet from the table. The title was “Bulletproof Abs.” The cover featured a blown-up image of a set of abs. They certainly looked like they could deflect bullets.

Yuichi began doing some basic clean-up on the books scattered haphazardly across the tabletop.

King of Grip Strength, King of Joints, The Complete Bajiquan, Why Didn’t Masahiko Kimura Kill Rikidozan?, The Science of Releasing Your Internal Power... those titles and more got swept into a neat pile at the edge of the kotatsu. He just couldn’t stand sitting at a messy table.

But sorting out that one minor mess didn’t change the deplorable state of the rest of the room. The most obvious bits of clutter were the weapons strewn all around.

There were lots of Chinese weapons: guandao, emeici, chain whips, meteor hammers, miaodao...

For Western-style weapons, there were quarterstaffs, crossbows, main gauches...

For Indian weapons, madu and a katar...

There were Japanese-style weapons, too. Manri-gusari, jutte, shurikens, and even katanas. The fans seemed a little feminine, at least, but they were made from steel... in other words, more weapons.

Yuichi had known that she had weapons, but not that she had so many, nor that she left them lying around out in the open like this. The paranoid question of what would happen if someone stepped on one began to gnaw at him.

Still, it wasn’t like the room would be appropriately girlish, even if you ignored the weapons. The floor was a mess of winding cables and mysterious circuit boards. There was a line of what looked like lockers piled up against one wall, filled with flickering machines. And even setting those aside, there were the masks, the paper talismans, and the altar, all with purposes unknown.

Yuichi pushed it all out of his mind. If he let himself dwell on it, he’d never stop.

“Okay! What’d you want to talk about?” Mutsuko asked enthusiastically. She was often roping Yuichi into things, but he couldn’t remember the last time he had come to her for advice. Maybe that was why her eyes brimmed with anticipation.

“Um, well, see... ever since yesterday, I’ve been seeing strange things, and I’m not sure why,” Yuichi explained, fumbling for the right words.

“Oh?” Mutsuko leaned forward over the table, exploding into an interrogation.

“What is it? What? What are you seeing? Huh? Lines? Lines of death? Have you got Mystic Eyes of Death Perception? We’ve gotta get you some glasses! But what do they even make those out of? Or can you see chakras? Have you got All Seeing White Eyes? Mirror Wheel Eyes? Or can you see ghosts? Is it ghost sight?”

“Calm down! It’s nothing that serious!”

“Got it! Hold on a second.” She took in a deep breath, clearly trying to calm herself.

“Okay! What are you seeing?”

“Um, it’s really not that big of a deal... I hope you didn’t get your hopes up too much, because it’s just... um... words.”

“Words?”

“I see words above people’s heads.”

“That’s all?” Mutsuko was clearly disappointed. Even though he was the one coming to her for advice, he almost felt like he had let her down.

But she bounced back quickly, leaning forward again.

“Right! Maybe it’s not a combat-based magic sight! But it’s still amazing! So, is there anything over my head right now? Can you see my lifespan, maybe? I’ve seen that in horror movies!”

“It just says ‘Big Sister.’”

“Huh?”

The words “Big Sister” were floating over Mutsuko’s head in big black letters.

“Above Mom’s head it says ‘Mom.’ Above Yori’s head it says ‘Little Sister.’”

Mutsuko, Yuichi, and Yoriko were siblings. They and their parents comprised the five-member Sakaki family.

“What does that mean? I don’t get it.”

“I don’t get it, either! I have no idea what’s going on, so I haven’t gone outside at all since it started up yesterday. But I have school tomorrow, so I can’t just stay inside. I thought you might know something.”

Yuichi had slept in on the last day of spring break, then gone to the kitchen for a late breakfast. That was when he noticed.

His mom was in the kitchen cooking, with the word “Mom” hovering over her head in black letters.

He blinked several times, thinking maybe he was still half-dreaming. But no matter how many times he blinked or rubbed his eyes, the black letters remained.

He wolfed down his food, then returned to his room. He thought maybe he was just overtired from spring vacation, so went back to bed. But it was all the same when he woke up. All he managed to do was confirm that he could see words over his sisters’ heads, too.

“So can you see something above your own head?”

“I couldn’t see anything when I looked in the mirror. Maybe I have to look at it directly... anyway, that’s all I know. Any idea what it could be?”

“Hold on! Just wait a minute!” Mutsuko pressed one hand to her forehead, and thrust the other toward Yuichi, palm out.

“Okay, but what’s wrong with me?”

“I’m thinking! You got a problem with that?” Mutsuko held the pose, apparently deep in thought.

She was the type of person who, once off in her own little world, couldn’t see anything else around her. She might stay that way all night if he let her.

Yuichi was just about to head back to his room when Mutsuko moved again. “Soul Reader... That’s it! That’s what it’s like! Maybe you’ve got magic eyes that can read a person’s true nature?”

“Huh? So ‘Big Sister’ is your true nature?”

“Yeah! There’s no big sister more big sister-y than me!” Mutsuko puffed out her chest. She’d always seemed to take particular pride in being a big sister, even above and beyond her usual boastfulness.

“I guess that goes for ‘Mom’ and ‘Little Sister’ and ‘Dad,’ too. Maybe it’s not worth worrying about.”

Hearing Mutsuko make so much noise about it had Yuichi feeling a bit foolish for worrying. So what if he saw the words “Big Sister” over his big sister’s head?

“By the way! Do you have any idea what might have awakened the power within you?”

“Huh? No... it was just there when I woke up in the morning.”

Although he had come to her for advice, he was a little surprised by how quick she was to believe in stuff like magic sight. She always talked about stuff in anime and manga like they really existed, but he’d always figured it was at least partly a put-on.

“Were you shot by an arrow or something?”

“I think I’d remember!”

“Did you eat a fruit with a spiral pattern on it?”

“I think I’d remember that, too.”

“Did you hear a voice asking, ‘Do you desire power?’”

“If I had, that would’ve been the first thing I asked about.”

“Hmm, I guess it’s the trope where you’re not aware of it... the influence of a Demon Quake or a Hell’s Gate...”

“Sorry, but I can’t give you any more than what I’ve already told you. I’ve already racked my brain for possible causes.”

Mutsuko sank back into deep thought. “Nanomachines, maybe... or a Pandora’s Box? We can’t rule out Personas, either...” After musing to herself for several seconds, she finally looked back up at Yuichi. “You must not tell anyone about this! You might end up the object of a superhuman hunt!”

“Who would do something like that?”

“A secret society! Yes, there could be a secret society for things like this! Be careful! They might find you and gouge out your eyes!”

“Hey, don’t say stuff like that!”

Obviously, Yuichi had no intention of telling anyone else about this. Only his weirdo sister would take a story like this seriously. Anyone else would doubt his sanity.

“I’m not going to tell anyone. So you keep it to yourself too, okay?”

“You got it! I’ll protect you from the secret societies, Yu!” There was pride in her voice as she clapped a hand against her chest. The sight really did fill him with confidence.

No matter what happens, my sister will be on my side. She may have been a little eccentric, but she had never let him down so far. Though he felt a little pathetic having to rely on her like this, talking to her really had relieved a lot of his worries.

But he started to regret it the moment he heard his sister asking for sekihan rice.

Maybe he shouldn’t have come to her, after all.

He could feel the dark clouds forming as he faced his first day of high school.

Strongest Gamer Lets Play in Another World Volume 1 Epilogue

Strongest Gamer Lets Play in Another World Volume 1 Epilogue

Have you ever heard of role playing? Its origins may be lesser known, but it has served as the basis for the RPG genre we know today. To ‘play a role’ may conjure up an image of actors performing on a stage or on a movie screen, but this isn’t a story acted out on a grandiose platform. No, it’s much simpler, more basic, yet still expansive and filled with endless possibilities.

Role playing happens a lot in everyday life, whether you notice it or not. From innocent games of make-believe and house as children, to interacting with strangers and eventually your seniors and teachers as we age, a mask is put on—a role is played. We incorporate those masks into ourselves, and sometimes they can even warp our personalities. But we don't have to let the roles we play define us...

“You’re heading towards the city in a horse-drawn carriage... It’s been two days since you left the village. As you near the dark path that leads into the forest, dirty men jump out of the bushes on the side of the road! They block your path, stopping your cart, and aggressively shout out to you, ‘This is Mountain Dogs turf! Hand over all your gold and valuables, or else face the consequences!’”

“When then... I jump out of the carriage wielding my lance, and strike a battle pose and respond with, ‘There are no rich passengers on this carriage. This is the only means of transport they have! If you mean to do us harm, then it is you who will face the consequences!’”

“The bandits stare at you with your lance and beautiful armor, then move in to attack. The fight is on! Alright... since it’s a fight, let’s prepare the paper to write on, and the figures.”

“Okay!”

This was one such game that involved role playing on a smaller scale—a make-believe tabletop adventure that I played together with Ann.

The experience was greatly enhanced with the use of a pen, some paper, and dice. All you needed to know how to do was speak and perform basic arithmetic. A game so timeless that all ages could enjoy. It transcended the ages, existing long before the age of electronic smartphones, and will continue forth long past their expiration.

Labyrinth #228 was in a sort of fantasy world, where the literacy rate wasn’t that high, and finding people that knew arithmetic beyond counting their fingers was rare. Simply being able to do basic math functions set you above the rest of the populous.

We let Fez handle the task of obtaining pen and paper for us to use. Despite how expensive they were, the quality was still rather poor. We could use charcoal to write and have slabs of wood or stone as the writing surface, but that was incredibly unwieldy. Plus, there was a certain level of romanticism when it came to using pen and paper for this sort of thing... The cultural differences between modern Earth and this fantasy world were pretty huge, so I figured this sort of game would be hard to popularize in Milt Village. Nonetheless, I had no problem playing with Ann, a girl so brilliant she would put adults of this world to shame.

Ann and I were using the free time we had between dinner and bedtime to play. Ever since I came to this world and met Ann, we played card games made with thin pieces of wood, and board games with handmade pieces. Our favorite game of them all though was one called “Labyrinths and Dragon’s Feast”. She asked me before why I liked this one so much, to which I told her that while card and board games were fun, being able to make your own adventures and characters in “Labyrinths and Dragon’s Feast” was way more enjoyable for me.

“With two bandits taken down, they are at a disadvantage and feeling desperate, so one tries to take a hostage. What will you do?”

“I won’t let him do that and use ‘Galewind’ to stop him!”

“You might not make it in time so you’ll have to roll for that.”

“Okay, so I throw two die and have to get more than a five and... An eight! I got it!”

“You manage to move so fast that no one can see you cutting between the bandit and the woman he was trying to take hostage.”

“I look at them with a fearless smile and say... ‘It’s useless to try and take hostages, you guys never learn. Do you even care for your own lives!?’”

Tabletop Role Playing Games (TRPGs) had the unique feature of being able to play with premade characters, or creating your own. There were a lot of games on PC and such that let you choose basic things like your occupation or gender, but not many that let you customize everything down to personality quirks and individual stats. I wish there were more games that did this. It was really interesting to play with your own custom character and go off on adventures. There were some games that had Yes or No choices for story progression, but they typically were still confinging when it came to player flexibility.

In our game here, Ann had created a character named... “Anne”. It was pretty easy to determine a person’s preference and tastes by the characters they created. And in some cases, the player bases their character off the idealized version of themselves.

“So you defeat the bandits, all the passengers of the carriage lavish you with gratitude.”

“Well, I smile at them and say, ‘I just happened to be on the same carriage as you all, but maybe this chance meeting was one of fate. One destined to happen.’”

Ann’s character was a 19-year old female warrior who was tall and had an extremely nice figure. Anne had a very caring personality and a strong sense of duty—she also had hopes and dreams of her own.

My heart was warmed by Ann’s cuteness as she tried to play out her gallant imaginary character. She even came up with cool one-liners, but then would get shy whenever she recited them so— No, that’s not important right now.

“You march straight into the bandit’s hideout. There, a man that seems to be the boss is lying in wait and greets you. He mockingly says, ‘Yer jus a trav’ler, ain’t cha? Watchu doin’ protectin’ dis sorry lot? Dey can even save der sorry asses.’”

“I say, ‘That’s right, I’m just a traveler that has nothing to do with them, but the tears of the children you caused with your misdeeds is more than enough reason to fight!’ while striking a pose and lunging at the boss bandit with my sword.”

I become worried as I look at Ann’s sparkling eyes filled with passion and joy.

There were various players that projected their idealized selves as TRPG characters. Anne was a gallant female warrior that wore plate armor and wielded swords and lances. Did she represent Ann’s ideals? There were no characters that could do absolutely everything in the world of TRPGs or MMORPGS. Typically there were a variety of roles ranging from tanks and healers to damage dealers, and they all came together in a party to fulfill their various roles and advance towards a similar goal. I had made this “Labyrinth and Dragon’s Feast” game so that even a beginner like Ann could enjoy it while keeping those basic rules in mind.

But Ann hadn’t chosen a healing profession, or even concentrated on healing skills, despite having such a sweet and gentle personality as Anne. It wasn’t like I was one of those people that equated female players as always being healers. But Ann didn’t so much as look at the healing system before she dashed straight for shields and swords. I was surprised she chose the role of an attacker without hesitation.

Ever since then, I began observing Ann and her preferences and playstyle of her character from the role of the facilitator of the adventure—the Game Master, if you will.

“The mayor of the village you saved bows his head deeply and thanks you. He says, ‘Thank you so much, traveler. These are are all the silver coins we collected among all the villagers. Please take them as a token of gratitude,’ and he hands you a bag with 48 silver coins inside.”

“Umm... let’s see... ‘That’s really nice of you, but won’t the village be in trouble if I take this? I’ll accept half of it as thanks, but please take the other half and repair the village.’ I take 24 coins and give back the rest to the mayor... Aoi, I can make it to next town with three silver coins, right?”

Ann’s sense of economics was quite nice. She was neither too modest or greedy. So even in her ideals she was pragmatic as well?

“I give Wata five silver coins and say, ‘Here, have this. You’re always helping me with the recovery potions.’”

Anne might excel in attack and defense as a warrior, but she had no way to recover herself. So I made an NPC companion for her named Wata, a doctor character that specialized in healing, and urged her not to forget about him. His occupation may involve healing people, but there was an expense that you had to keep in mind, as medical ingredients depleted as they were used.

It was surprising to see her interact with Wata, but she wasn’t handing all the money for him to manage, she managed her own money and gave some to him from time to time.

Right now I was giving Ann an allowance we called a ‘salary’, but I took care of her food, clothes and living expenses as well. Basically, I was raising her myself. Would Ann have the independence and capacity to take care of herself even if I wasn’t looking after her?

I had come to realize Ann’s capacity to live was quite high in the time we had spent together, but... Actually, that wasn’t all that strange in hindsight. Considering how Jenny was, it wasn’t all that difficult to figure out how Ann had become so independent to the point where she learned how to read, write, and do math.

This wasn’t like Earth where there were various welfare services for people. We were in another world that didn’t seem to have advanced much past the middle pages. I became all too aware of that fact when Sara got sick and her mortality was very much up in the air. With this in mind, it made sense to me that Jenny tried to raise Ann in such a way that she could fend for herself in the event that Jenny died or became unable to work. The last time I asked, Ann told me that Jenny was her only family left, which was all the more reason to be motivated to learn.

Even if crisis was to befall Anne, Ann was a really good player, and her responses always surprised me.

“A knight in imposing black armor clashes swords with you and says, ‘You know the difference in our power, don’t you? It’d be a shame for you to die here, so why not become my minion? I will help you if you submit to me...’”

My game didn’t have any rebirth mechanics or anything like other games had. Once your character died, that was it. So even if was just the life of the character that was on the line, the fear of death was always around the corner.

“I’ll let my sword answer! ‘I won’t give up. I won’t be able to keep on living if I lost who I am. I will defend my humanity at all costs!’ Yes, if I use all the magic tools I have, there’s about a 50% chance of winning!”

She had the strength to confront death head-on, and the pride to treasure her dignity.

“Zzz...”

I remembered something I had noticed from observations of Ann, as I looked at her happy, sleeping face. She glued herself to me and dressed lightly when we went to sleep, so it was kind of difficult to keep my head cool. While the female warrior Anne played out in the game, the thought of Ann projecting herself through Anne made me feel somewhat lonely, but also happy.

Right now, Ann was the one being protected by me, but if Anne represented her true ideals, then she wasn’t very satisfied with how things were right now. Even if she wasn’t unhappy with them, it wasn’t something she’d want to live with forever. Which reminded me... She’d been devoting herself to helping me with potion making and doing housework. Judging from her attitude towards Wata the NPC, she seemed more eager to protect than be protected. She would probably want a partner that could stand on equal ground with.

If Ann told me someday that she wanted to me to be her ‘equal partner’... What would I say? What kind of face would I make? Would I feel happy or sad? Which one of us would overcome the other? She may even find someone that wasn’t me to be her partner... I wanted to believe in the relationship we developed between each other over the last few months. I could rest easy if she chose me as her partner, right? The feelings swirling within me were a mix of 90% expectation and 10% anxiety—just like when you came across a cool-looking game with a large update coming.

I slowly closed my eyes and fell asleep before the warm feeling inside my chest dissipated.

Life may have tons of difficult events in store, but there will always room to have fun and play around.

Strongest Gamer Lets Play in Another World Volume 1 Chapter 5

A week had passed, and I walked to the front of the train station, dressed in my brand new business suit.

It wasn’t a custom-tailored luxury suit, it was just one I’d gotten from a store for a reasonable price. It was so new that I still had the tight feeling around me that you felt when you wore new clothes for the first time. I rolled my bag over and arrived at my office near the bus stop. I had a monthly salary of 180,000 yen, with overtime and holiday pay calculated separately. My transportation expenses were even covered, and there was a semi-annual inspection for salary increases, with bonuses awarded for getting certain milestones. There were even 4 days off a month, and 20 additional vacation days per year. No extended leaves, though, but there was annual paid leave.

It was pretty typical to stay late at work during the busy season. My hours would be high, but they would be added up as overtime in the end. Lodging was paid for by the company as well, along with various utilities like water. I had landed some pretty amazing working conditions; fewer and fewer people got deals like this in recent years. There was also a clause in the contract that stated it had to be firmly protected and maintained, though there shouldn’t be a problem with upholding that.

On the neck of my suit was a rainbow-lustered silver metal pin with a blue dragon carved into it. It was the company badge that had been provided to me. My family said it looked almost like a toy.

“Good morning.”

I knocked on the door of the office building and went inside.

“Good morning. This’ll be your first day as a full-time employee, right? Here, this is your exclusive key, Kousaka-san.”

I greeted my seniors at the workplace and received a key that shined with the same luster as the company badge.

While I walked towards the back of the office, I couldn’t help but mutter out loud.

“By the way... What’s the deal with Karumi-san?”

“So you finally ask, huh? Well, since you’re a full-timer now, let’s just say she’s a relative of the Great Dark Lord. She joined the company thanks to her connections, but managed to mess up badly one too many times, so she couldn’t actually get a managerial position. Thanks to that, she ended up becoming a regular office lady.”

“Ah, so she’s his daughter, huh?”

—Maybe she failed at the survival training?

My mind wandered among various possibilities as I inserted my key into the door at the back of the office. The door looked like it was made of plastic or some other kind of synthetic material. Its hinged creaked as I opened the door.

I stepped forward. My feet land on soft ground and I heard the sound of the door as it closed behind me. A pleasant and nostalgic wind, which carried the scent of fresh soil, nature, and pure water reached my nose as I now stood at the bottom of the ravine.

“Aoi!”

I turned back when I heard her voice. The sight of a lovely girl standing in front of the old cabin made me wonder if this was how happiness felt.

“I’m back, Ann. I can answer you now... Would you mind staying with me forever? I don’t know much about this world... And it seems like I’m no good without you.”

“You’re so hopeless! You really don’t know anything at all! That’s why I worry so much... But yes, I’ll stay with you forever.”

The sweet girl embraced me as tears rolled down her face. I wanted to believe they were tears of happiness rather than sadness.

“Now we can be together forever, right? I don’t mind if I’m not your number one, just let me stay close to you, okay?”

—Excuse me? That was a weird turn.

“Now that you gave me your answer, I’ll be your mistress starting today, right? So we can always be together even if you fool around or get a wife, right?”

“Wait a minute, Ann... Where did you come up with that idea!?”

“Auntie taught me a lot about it, why?”

“JENNYYYYYYYYYY!”

“Hm?”

My roar echoed out once again across the bottom of a ravine in another world.

This was my life. I had no complaints.

The difficulty setting was set to the extreme. There were no choices or hints, and no saving or loading. But... it was so unbelievably fun that I just wanted to keep playing.

I think I’ll keep living and playing seriously, having as much fun as I can, until the very end...

Strongest Gamer Lets Play in Another World Volume 1 Chapter 4

The ever dwindling days left of training slowly passed by.

Since there were so few days left, I didn’t really bother doing something hasty. If I did anything else and it went poorly, then at worse I’d leave something half-baked behind. I didn’t know what would become of the labyrinth, but it would still be good to have a budget. I made something of a treasury for all the DL coins under the cabin, and collected all the materials that might be overabundant, along with the potions and lamps I’d made, and sold them all to Tundra.

Milt Village’s square was crowded with people on the morning of the market day. For the most part, it looked like a place where people bartered with money. Those that had goods spread them out on a cloth on the ground and lined them up like street vendors, and those who weren’t selling visited the stalls and negotiated.

“So this is the surface... It’s lot less green than thought there would be, almost like a wasteland, really.”

“Monsters hate living in places like these, so it’s easier to build fields and villages. There’s a forest at the other side of the bridge, see?”

I looked to the west and saw there was grassland spreading out on the other side across the bridge, just like Ann said. I could just make out what seemed to be a forest filled with trees further out, too.

“Are there dangerous creatures living in places like that?”

When you boiled down my profile, it was comprised of about one or two lines: Aoi Kousaka, Age 22; fresh out of some minor science university, and hardcore gamer.

Pretty straightforward, don’t you think? So straightforward it hurts, though. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I had spent more than half my life so far playing games. Ever since I touched my first game at the age of three, I’d become completely obsessed, and dedicated my life to playing them. Although games were my lifeblood, I still worked hard to maximize the amount of time I had to play.

You must have heard the phrase “Life’s just a bad game” before, right? I’m sure you have. Does “You can’t hit the reset button on life” ring any bells? How about “Life’s just shovelware”?

It all sounds so depressing, doesn’t it? Just hearing those words would drag down any semblance of good vibes, so let's think about it for a moment. If you compared real life to the countless amount of ‘good games’ in the world, you'd probably be hard-pressed not to discount it as just another ‘bad game’. Ah, but there’s more to it than just that.

The Faraway Paladin Vol 4 Chapter 5

The Faraway Paladin Volume 4 Chapter 5

“Well, time for me to hit the sack, I guess. Gotta be up early tomorrow.”

After we’d spent a while reminiscing, Menel gathered up his tools and the arrow shafts he’d finished scraping and rose to his feet.

“Yeah,” I said. “Good night.”

He was no ordinary opponent.

“Diiiiiiiiiiie!”

An enraged, husky yell that seemed to thunder from the ground itself accompanied the massive club swinging towards me. Actually, could it even be called a club? It was literally the trunk of a tree, wide enough that I probably couldn’t wrap my arms all the way around it, and being swung with such terrible force that it bent. Although the trunk had at least been hastily stripped of its branches, it was not something that a living creature should have been swinging around. If it hit me, death was all but certain!

“Yeee, it’s chilly!”

“It is, isn’t it?”

Turning back the clock, it was a morning in the middle of winter, a few days after the winter solstice. I had a cloak with a hood on as I walked down the streets of Whitesails with my troubadour friend, Bee. Although she preferred light clothing, she couldn’t handle cold weather and was wearing a super thick, soft, and fluffy coat. Together with her height (the most distinguishing feature of halflings—she was only about the size of a young girl) and her soft red hair, she gave me the impression of an adorable little creature like a rabbit or something.

As they looked at the spear, Menel frowned, Bee’s eyes sparkled, and Al looked satisfied. It was early afternoon one day in winter. Logs crackled in the fireplace in the great hall of my Torch Port mansion, where the spear rested on a large table. Their three reactions to it couldn’t have been more different.

The Faraway Paladin Volume 4 Chapter 1

It was the kind of night in spring when the cold air had lost its edge and green grass seemed to grow in the span of a single evening. The office was lit up by the brilliant glow of a lantern. What was inside the lantern was not wavering fire, but a pure-white shell with a character engraved upon it: Lumen, meaning “light.”

Paladin Of The End Vol 3.2 Side Story

Paladin Of The End Vol 3.2 Chapter Side Story

Glittering rays of sunlight shone through an endless number of enormous trees lined up like a temple’s colonnade. We were deep in Beast Woods, in the domain of the great Lord of the Woods, the Lord of Holly.

“Ohh! This is, great place! ‘You are very thoughtful, Sir William.’”

“‘No, trouble.’ So, about what we discussed...”

“Muh-huh. We accepted.”

The one nodding back was someone so large he was impossible to forget. He was the forest giant I’d fought with once, Gangr of the race of Jotunn. Tribal giants were walking all around the area with curiosity, setting up large canopy tents made of beast hide. The men were over three meters tall and the women more than two and a half, so they were quite the sight. It kind of made me feel like a halfling.

After that, we acquired a number of dragon scales and treasures as proof that we’d successfully killed the dragon. With regard to Valacirca’s corpse, it would be a problem if we just left it there to rot, so I used benediction to place the Miracle of Preservation on it. According to Reystov, almost all parts of a dragon’s body made for high-grade ingredients and materials, so it was possible that we’d end up returning later with equipment to take it apart.

He looked exactly like most people’s conception of a wicked dragon, stretched out on a mountainous expanse of the dwarves’ treasure.

He had obviously strong jaws, twisted horns, and a thick and supple neck. His body was covered with tough scales, and from it grew a pair of large, membranous wings. The sharp, swordlike protrusions running down his spine became progressively smaller as they continued all the way to the tip of his long, elegant tail. They were as beautiful as they were fierce. I could see a brilliant mind in his golden eye shining in the darkness, and in the same body resided a nature that was horrifically vicious and savage.

Beyond the West Gate lay stone walls and stone floors—endless stone passages that gave a rigid and cold impression. The passages were wide with high ceilings, probably because they had been important trade routes with the elven lands.

We made sure that the hydra was definitely dead and that the female elf had been healed. Then I handed my gear to Al, pulled the elf’s arms up, crouched down, and lifted her over my shoulders. It was like the fireman’s carry that firemen and lifeguards in my previous world used for transporting people in need of rescue. It made a person easy to lift and fast to move around with.

Autumn was in full swing. It was that time of year where every day was slightly colder than the last. With the wind in its sail and a sky of thin cloud above, our boat seemed to glide across the gently rolling surface of the lake. To the north, I could see the splendor of the mountain range surrounded by cloud. Those were the Rust Mountains.

“So we just have to go down this branch of the river to the west?”

Under the morning sun, the invisible boat moved without sound and yet at remarkable speed. To get this result, I had cast the Word of Invisibility on the boat, and Menel had called to the fairies of wind to cast the spells Tailwind and Mute.

Several wooden coffins were lined up in the burial chamber. The ceiling was shaped into a stable arch, and patterns reminiscent of flowing water were drawn on the walls in vivid red. The chamber went back a little way, but it couldn’t really have been called spacious.

“I can’t protect both of us.” I called out to Al as I took a step forward. “Run as fast as you can.” I steadied my breathing, focused on the circulation of mana—

“Oop. Easy there, warrior of the flame. You too, dwarf.”

The black-haired dwarf Al became my squire, and Grendir paid us a formal visit a few days later. Good to his word, Ghelreis seemed to have persuaded him.

“Uhh, so, Al,” I said. “Squires are often asked to cover for their own expenses, but I will be providing your equipment and also paying you a wage.”

That night, after I fell asleep in my home in Torch Port, I had a dream.

It was a dream of that city of the dead, of which I had such fond memories.

“Listen closely, Will. What, in fact, are the fae?” Gus, with his pale blue body, spoke slowly while stroking his chin. “In a time beyond time, the God of Creation spoke the Words, engraved the Signs, made the sun and the moon, split day from night, and gathered water to separate the oceans and the earth. Fire was born, wind was born, trees were born. It was before gods, and before people.”

The wisteria hanging from the pergola swayed in the breeze. We were in the courtyard of the lord’s mansion at the center of Whitesails, the city that was the gateway to the continent of Southmark. Flowers of bright colors blossomed in full glory under the mansion’s windows, surrounded by the brilliant white of its walls.

Paladon Of The End Volume 2 Chapter 6 (Final)

Under the brightness of the summer sun, long grass swayed in a pleasant breeze.

“Yeeeaaahhh!”

“Here’s to victory!”

The field was full of adventurers clapping each other on the shoulder and raising their horns in toast.

There had been a lot to deal with in the immediate aftermath of the battle, but we’d sorted most of it out, and were attempting to head back to Whitesails. However, the enormous number of beast heads and demon dust we were carrying with us caused roars of celebration in each village that we passed through. Casks were brought out, and parties started in middle of the day. The ale poured into the horns tasted refreshing under the early summer sunshine.

All kinds of things continued moving forward at an incredible pace. After all the merrymaking was over, I put in a formal request to Ethel and the vice-bishop and received permission to go demon-hunting. Ostensibly, I was a single priest doing some independent charity work, but I had the backing of proper authority and power. The scale of what I was now involved in was incredible, but this was the smoothest way to get things done. If there was any trouble from now on, it would probably be necessary to demonstrate my allegiance to the bishop and the duke, but that was the price to pay for my new authority. I couldn’t imagine that anything would develop that quickly, so I decided to think about that later.

Paladin Of The End Vol 2 Chapter 4

Paladin Of The End Volume 2 Chapter 4

Whitesails was a wealthy city. The people walking through the streets were wearing clothes dyed in all kinds of colors, and I could see certain tendencies in their hairstyles and accessories.

In short—get this—trends existed here! They had the time and money to think about fashion! Just that fact alone was shocking to me.

In fact, my first shock had come before that, when I entered the city. There was no kind of check required, and no toll to pay to pass through the city gate. I’d subconsciously been assuming that there would be that kind of thing based on what I knew about medieval cities, and I’d been prepared to be kept waiting, but they just let us right in.

“All our livestock’s been wiped out, and a whole lot of tools that’ll be impossible to replace have been smashed.”

“Wow...”

There were still a lot of problems for the villagers even after taking back their village from the hands of the demons. Many of their draft animals and tools had been lost. The villagers had serious expressions on their faces as they discussed the problem from all angles. “We’re gon’ needa stock up at Whitesails...”

Paladin Of The End Volume 2 Chapter 2

The following morning, after spending the night under their hospitality, I was seen off by Tom, John, and the other villagers, and left to take the village back from the demons.

Guided by Menel, I made my way northeast. After a reasonable distance, I met a branch of the wide river, took some stepping stones across it, and moved on through the forest. Treading on dead leaves and clambering over the mossy trunks of fallen trees, I followed after Menel with an appropriate level of caution.

They were wearing a cloak with a hood that made it difficult to see their eyes. They were holding a uniquely decorated bow in their hand. An arrow had already been nocked on the string. It had white feathers. They hadn’t drawn the bowstring back yet, but they seemed to have an alertness about them that told me they could have that done in an instant if they felt like it. Their cloak and outer clothing had a soil-and-grass color scheme, and they were wearing tall leather boots and leather gloves. A short machete was hanging from their waist, and they had several other knives as well. This person was probably a hunter.

The overcast sky was thin enough to permit the western sun to filter through, but even with my head tilted towards it, I couldn’t feel its warmth. I didn’t think I needed to worry about frostbite, but the numbing chill of the air was hard to ignore.
